Canon Personality:
Upon first glance Edward comes off as a head-strong, arrogant, and incredibly stubborn young man. He is quick to make judgments and, while he is a good person at heart, tends to butt heads with anyone that disagrees with him. His temper can often get the best of him, landing him in trouble when a more mild approach would have easily avoided it. He isn't a complete fire-brand, however, and is certainly capable of patience and calm when it is needed--most often his irritable side comes out with personalities similar to his.
Ed is an incredibly brilliant scientist and a prodigy alchemist. At ten years old he and his brother were able to survive an attempt at human transmutation, something that even adults that had studied all their life could not even attempt, and the next year Edward became a State Alchemist. His understanding of science, especially chemistry, seems almost instinctive but really is a combination of intense study and a lightning-fast intellect. Ed has been known to make astounding leaps of logic, making connections that would not even occur to many others. Because of this he can get impatient with others who cannot keep up with his mental pace, and doesn't tend to collaborate well on any projects.
Despite his prickly exterior, Ed is a very caring and compassionate person. While he will quite readily bicker and pick arguments with people, he doesn't try to hurt people out of malice and when he realizes he has generally tries his best to make up for it. He offers help where he can, often just dropping a favor into someone's lap and refusing any thanks in return for it. This can be at odds sometimes with his prideful and somewhat self-important nature, but more often those aspects of him come out to hide his insecurities and hurts; in his most personal moments he is always kind and gentle, trying his best to help the people he cares about.
His thick head tends to get him into a lot of trouble, however. When Edward gets an idea into his head he holds onto it like a hungry dog on a bone, sometimes even in the face of evidence that whatever it is is clearly wrong. It can be both his greatest asset and his worst weakness all at the same time--while he would never achieve some of his most amazing feats without sticking things out in the face of waves of opposition, he also hurt people by refusing to give up on certain ideas (partially out of a fear of what him being wrong would mean for what he had already done). He can be reasoned with, of course, and on certain subjects he can be argued over to another side, but more often than not getting Ed off a certain trajectory is like pulling a moving train off its tracks.
At his core Edward is a kind and incredibly loyal person, doing everything he can to protect and take care of those he cares about. The line between friend and family is often blurred for him, and while his often standoffish Ed will always stand by someone if they have gained his loyalty. For him, betrayals cut deep and people who abuse a relationship will very quickly gain his ire. He often even feels an attachment to people he has just met, and frequently during his journey across Amestris stepped in to help someone that was hurting for no other reason than because he could. As he got older he realized and accepted that he can't help everyone, but he still tries to help where he can.
His little brother, Alphonse, is quite literally the center of his world. They've been tied at the hip ever since they were little, and the trials of their life have only made that bond stronger; unhealthily so, to some eyes. Ed would do anything to protect his little brother, up to and including sacrificing his body and soul in order for Al to be restored to a human body. Al is his stabilizing force, calming and grounding him when he gets too hot for others to handle, and in turn Ed does his best to make sure Al is safe and happy. Of course they have fights and arguments like any pair of siblings, but in the end they will always need each-other.
Personality Shifts:
Where Edward came to Ryslig a worn out, skeptical, and altogether traumatized young man, he still had plenty far to fall. Being transformed into a monster against one's will and forced to commit cannibalism in order to stay sane would have a lasting effect on anyone, but for Edward in particular the comparison not only to chimera but also the homunculii of his world was not lost on him. It only served to fuel his faint delusion that this was his own personal hell, causing him to become self-destructive and increasingly despondent, though to outward appearances he attempted to maintain a tough attitude.
Edward did manage to form several strong friendships in Ryslig, most notably with Ginko, Heather Mason, and Stocke. Where Stocke and Heather were both fellow Devil's Nest workers and very much fellow teens getting into all sorts of trouble, Ginko was a figure of stability among the horrors of the Ryslig peninsula, and one that Edward clung to without even truly realizing it. He also had much less friendly relationships, a fierce enmity with Henry Townshend and Envy and a low-burning feud with Zolf J. Kimbley that was only kept cool by Greed's presence and unquestioned authority in the Nest. In these relationships Edward had a release valve for all of his anger and frustration, one that he perhaps indulged in too readily thanks to the influence of Greed's 'why bother staying human' mentality. Between this and his 'species' being much more emotionally volatile by nature, Edward's temper has blossomed into a rather spectacular thing--though he does make an effort to only direct it at those he feels deserve his ire.
This didn't mean that Edward lost all of his old morals, however. He still holds the ideals of his youth, even if they have become somewhat tarnished, and that his lifestyle was steadily slipping further and further from them drove Edward further into his depression, and exacerbated his alcohol dependency. While he was functional and hid the bad habit fairly well, it became much more obvious towards his last few months on the peninsula. Ginko actually had to pick Edward up off the streets after a particularly bad bender and put him through something of a detox, forcing Edward to recognize what he was doing to himself and start trying to change for the better. However, there was not much time to put this new look on life into effect before Edward disappeared.

- Strong like
bullgoat As a Ryslig minotaur, Edward is incredibly strong and can run flat out for several miles without getting tired. This endurance does not extend to flight, however, mostly due to his sheer mass restricting how long he can stay in the air. (Who knew, there actually is a reason flighted creatures have evolved to minimize weight!) - Take to the skies Edward is in possession of a truly massive pair of bat-like wings which are fully capable of flight. However, due to his build (both not being physically designed for flight and having dense as fuck muscles) he can only stay in the air for about two hours at a time before needing to land and rest.
- Bovine GPS It is nearly impossible for Edward to get lost, and so long as he has a vague idea of the place he needs to find he can make his way to it with minimal unnecessary detours. This does not mean he knows the lay of the land before he's ever seen it, however, only that he will have a vague idea of the type of topography in a certain direction. Mazes and cities are where he excels, not even needing street names to find any locations within he desires.
- Just don't move Edward's sense of hearing and night-vision have drastically improved, to the point that loud music is actually rather uncomfortable for him. His also highly aware of any movement within his line of sight--good luck sneaking around him.
- A one man band He has gained a supernatural skill with any musical instrument, and is able to play like a professional even if he hasn't ever seen a particular instrument in his life. His music is also vaguely hypnotic to magically-susceptible humans, though he tries to not take advantage of this.
- Beware the fog When a thick enough fog rolls in, the curse of the Fog God becomes even more potent and Edward transforms into a stronger and more bestial form. When in this fog form, he is much stronger but also far more volatile, and can easily fall into animalistic urges if he isn't careful.
MONSTER WEAKNESSES
- Obligatory Hannibal joke goes here Like any other Ryslig monster Edward needs to feed on sentient beings, specifically their flesh. If he doesn't eat at least one average adult's worth of flesh each month, he will start to grow mentally unstable until his prey drive overwhelms reason and he goes on a rampage.
- Temper, temper Already an irritable individual, as a Ryslig minotaur Edward is even more liable to pick fights and get angry, even about ridiculous things. He holds grudges for a long time, and doesn't forgive easily.
- Turn it down! As a side-effect of his enhanced hearing, any loud high-pitched noise will give Ed a splitting headache, debilitating him and leaving him helpless for as long as it goes on.
OTHER ABILITIES
- Karate Kid Edward is a very skilled fighter, and is a master of hand-to-hand combat. Even against those of greater strength than his, he is able to hold his own.
- The Fullmetal Alchemist As an alchemist he has a genius ability with chemistry as well, and knows the chemical compounds of most common materials (and many uncommon ones). While he can't clap and put things together anymore, he can very easily mix together complex chemicals so long as he has a decent lab.
